Why homeowners choose Selenium

One qualified electrician,
start to finish

Most solar companies send a salesperson, then a stranger with a van. Selenium Energy is family run: Steve surveys your property, prices it honestly and does the installation himself with his own small team. That is why every Google review so far is five stars.

Common questions

Straight answers before
you commit to anything

Are you MCS certified?

Steve is MCS-qualified for solar PV and battery installation and the company's MCS accreditation is currently in progress. We are registered with RECC, the Renewable Energy Consumer Code, and are OZEV-authorised for EV charger installations.

What does a solar and battery system cost?

Every roof is different, so solar and battery work is quoted individually rather than sold off a price list. Recent installs have ranged from £6,995 for 10 panels with a Fox EP6 battery to £8,900 for 12 panels with a Sigenergy 10kW battery. Solar and battery installations also carry 0% VAT.

How quickly will I get my quote?

Surveys and quotes are free and are typically with you within 48 hours of the visit. You deal directly with Steve throughout: there are no salespeople and no follow-up pressure.

How long does an installation take?

Most domestic solar and battery systems are completed in a single day, and a standard EV charger install is usually a few hours. Rewires and larger electrical projects are scheduled around your household.

Am I covered if something goes wrong?

All workmanship is guaranteed for two years, on top of manufacturer warranties on the equipment supplied: up to 30 years depending on the brand. All electrical work is certified to the 18th Edition BS 7671 wiring regulations under NAPIT and Part P.

How does payment work?

A 25% deposit secures your installation date, with the balance due on completion once you are happy with the work.

Why Selenium

An independent installer,
not a national sales operation

“The person who prices your job is the person who fits it: there is nobody in the middle adding commission to your quote.”

Selenium Energy was set up by Steve Higgins after 25 years as an electrician, much of it spent working for larger companies where the sales pitch mattered more than the installation. Going independent means the person who prices your job is the person who fits it, and there is nobody in the middle adding commission to your quote.

That electrical background is what separates a solar install done properly from one that causes problems later. Panels, inverters and batteries are only as good as the wiring, isolation and consumer unit behind them. Because Steve holds City & Guilds 2391 inspection and testing and the 18th Edition qualification, and is NAPIT registered and Part P approved, the whole system is designed, wired and certified by one accountable person: including any board upgrade the installation needs.

The same applies to EV charging. As an OZEV-authorised installer we fit Fox, Zappi, Ohme and Wallbox units, tie them into an existing solar array where it makes sense, and load-test the supply first so your charger is not sharing capacity it does not have. Most home charger installations take a few hours, and pricing starts from £900 supplied and fitted or from £500 to fit a unit you have bought yourself.

Alongside the renewables work we still do everything a household needs from an electrician: consumer unit upgrades, full and partial rewires, EICR safety inspections and certificates for homeowners and landlords, extra sockets and lighting, outdoor and outbuilding supplies, smart home and energy monitoring, and fault finding when something trips and nobody can say why. Emergency call-outs are available outside standard hours, and enquiries can be sent through this site at any time of day.

On money: solar and battery installations carry 0% VAT, a 25% deposit secures the installation date, and the balance is only due once the work is complete and you are happy with it. Workmanship is guaranteed for two years and equipment carries manufacturer warranties of up to 30 years depending on the brand: Fox ESS is the preferred system and Duracell battery installations are also covered. MCS accreditation for solar and battery is currently in progress, and we would rather say that plainly than overstate it.
