The city centre and the streets around the cathedral close are dominated by pre-1919 stone and brick construction, much of it listed or within the Salisbury conservation area, where roof coverings, rainwater goods and visible alterations are all subject to planning controls. Move out to Harnham, Bishopdown and Bemerton Heath and the housing shifts to interwar and mid-century semis and estates, with more straightforward roof structures and modern consumer units, though many still on their original wiring.

Beyond the city, Wilton, Downton, Amesbury and the villages along the A36 and A338 mix Victorian farmhouses, converted agricultural buildings and newer infill housing with genuinely rural smallholdings, some running outbuildings, stables or workshops off the same domestic supply as the house. Each of these building types calls for a different survey approach, and getting the fixing method, cable route and consumer unit specification right the first time matters more on older or listed property, where remedial work is disruptive and sometimes restricted.

Salisbury sits in the Avon valley at the confluence of several chalk streams, and the surrounding downland brings a different microclimate to the coastal towns we also cover: colder winter mornings, a higher chance of frost, and wind funnelling along the valley that needs accounting for in roof-mounted equipment fixings. Stone-tiled and clay-tiled roofs common on older property in and around the cathedral city need fixing systems matched to the tile profile rather than a generic clamp, and slate roofs on Victorian terraces bring their own handling requirements.

Orientation varies more in Salisbury than in a purely suburban town, because many rural properties and smallholdings have outbuildings and barns that can host a south-facing array even where the main house roof faces the wrong way. Mature trees around the water meadows and in village gardens can also shade a roof for part of the day, so we assess shading at survey rather than relying on satellite imagery alone, and we design array layout and inverter strategy around what the roof and its surroundings actually offer.

City properties are generally on modern three-phase or robust single-phase supplies, but rural Wiltshire is a different picture: smallholdings and farmhouses around Downton, Wilton and Amesbury are frequently on older single-phase rural supplies that were never designed for a battery, an EV charger and a solar inverter all drawing and exporting from the same connection.

The Salisbury conservation area covers much of the historic centre, and a number of individual properties around the close and along the principal medieval streets carry listed status. Solar panels, external cabling and any change to roof coverings on listed buildings or within the conservation area may need planning consent or listed building consent, and we discuss this at survey rather than after a quote has been issued, so there are no surprises about what can and cannot go where.

Access is a second practical constraint: some cathedral close and city centre streets have restricted or no on-street parking and narrow pavements, which affects how equipment and scaffolding are brought to site and how long that takes. Rural properties bring the opposite challenge - long, sometimes unmade driveways, farm gates and shared accesses - which we account for when planning install day logistics so the visit runs to schedule.
