Portsmouth is one of the most densely built cities in the country, and its housing reflects that. Southsea and Fratton are dominated by Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many now converted into flats with shared freeholds, split supplies and communal areas that need to be factored into any electrical or solar work. Cosham, Drayton and Portchester carry more suburban 20th-century semis and detached housing, generally easier to work on but still often with wiring that has been extended piecemeal over decades of different owners.

A large share of Portsmouth's housing stock is rented, whether single flats or converted terraces let room by room, which means we are frequently working to landlord timescales and needing to coordinate with tenants over access. This is routine for us, but it does shape how a job is scheduled compared with an owner-occupied house where the resident is available all day.

Portsmouth benefits from genuinely high sunshine hours for the south coast, which is a real advantage for solar generation once shading is accounted for. The challenge is roof size and orientation on terraced housing: Southsea and Fratton properties often have smaller, steeper roof planes shared closely with neighbouring properties, sometimes with chimneys, dormers or party-wall features that reduce usable panel area and need careful layout to maximise output.

Salt-laden air off the Solent is a genuine consideration for anything mounted outdoors, particularly close to Southsea seafront, along Portchester's coastline or near the harbour side by Fratton. Untreated fixings and standard mounting hardware corrode faster in this environment than they would inland, so we specify components rated for coastal exposure rather than the cheapest option that would be fine 20 miles inland.

Portsmouth's electrical supplies are generally well established given the city's age and density, but converted flats and multi-occupancy terraces often have older or shared supply arrangements that need careful checking before any solar, battery or EV charger work goes ahead. Where a property has been split into flats, establishing which circuits belong to which unit, and whether the existing consumer unit provision is adequate, is often the first job at survey rather than an afterthought.

Off-street parking, or the lack of it, is the single biggest constraint on EV charger installations across much of Portsmouth. Southsea, Fratton and many of the older terraced streets rely on shared or on-street parking with no dedicated space, which limits where a home charger can practically be fitted and connected. We assess this honestly at enquiry stage: some properties have a driveway or private parking that makes installation straightforward, others genuinely do not have a workable option, and we would rather say so early than take a deposit for a job that cannot proceed.

Dense terraced streets in Southsea and Fratton mean scaffolding access, parking for our vehicle and equipment, and coordination with neighbours are all practical considerations that need planning before install day, particularly where a road has permit parking or narrow access. Flats and converted properties also often require freeholder or managing agent permission before roof or external work can go ahead, which we factor into scheduling from the outset.

Some parts of Portsmouth, including areas around Old Portsmouth and parts of Southsea, carry conservation area status where external alterations including solar panel positioning need a sympathetic approach and occasionally planning consent rather than automatic permitted development rights. We check this at survey and flag it clearly before a quote is finalised.
