Winchester's centre and the streets around the Cathedral Close hold some of the oldest housing stock we work on: timber-framed and Georgian buildings, many within conservation areas, where wiring routes have to respect original fabric and finishes. Move a little further out and Fulflood, Stanmore and the streets north of the station are largely Victorian and Edwardian terraces, often with bay windows, solid walls and roof spaces that were never designed with modern loft insulation or cabling in mind.

St Cross and Weeke add a wave of 1930s semis and detached houses with more generous roof space and easier loft access, which usually makes solar and rewiring work more straightforward. Badger Farm, Kings Worthy and the newer development around Winnall bring us into 1980s-onwards estates and recent new-builds, with plasterboard stud walls, modern boards and, in the newest cases, wiring already designed with EV charging and solar in mind, though even these need checking rather than assuming.

Winchester sits in a river valley cut by the Itchen, with the surrounding chalk downland shaping wind patterns that differ noticeably from the flatter ground further south towards Southampton. Steep-pitched slate and clay tile roofs are common on the Victorian terraces, which affects panel layout and scaffold access, while the wider hipped roofs common in Badger Farm and Kings Worthy give more flexible options for array orientation.

Mature trees are a genuine factor here: the tree-lined streets around St Cross and the wooded slopes near the water meadows can shade a roof for part of the day even when the orientation is otherwise excellent, so shading is assessed properly at survey rather than assumed from a satellite image. Valley wind funnelling along the Itchen is also something we factor into panel and battery-cupboard siting on more exposed plots.

Central Winchester's older terraces frequently still run single-phase supplies installed decades ago, with fuse boards that have never been upgraded to modern RCBO protection: a common and straightforward job for us, but one that needs identifying before a solar or battery quote can be finalised. Some rural fringes towards Twyford and the edge of the district can also be on older single-phase supplies where a DNO application is needed before higher-capacity solar or EV charging work can proceed.

Off-street parking varies a lot by street: driveways in St Cross, Badger Farm and Kings Worthy suit a standard EV charger install, while terraces closer to the centre sometimes rely on on-street parking, which changes where a charger can practically be sited and whether cable routing across a pavement needs addressing.

A meaningful part of central Winchester, including areas around the Cathedral, the Broadway and much of the historic core, falls within conservation area designation, and some individual buildings are listed. Solar panels, external cabling and even some consumer unit locations can need extra care or, occasionally, planning consideration in these areas, and we flag this at survey rather than after a quote has been accepted.

Practical access matters too: narrow streets around the city centre restrict scaffold and delivery vehicle access compared with the wider roads on newer estates, and permit or resident parking arrangements sometimes need sorting in advance. None of this is unusual for us: it is simply factored into the schedule and the quote from the start.
