A home charge point is a dedicated circuit, not an appliance. It runs at high current for hours at a time, often overnight and unattended, which is why cable sizing, protective devices, earthing arrangement and load management matter far more than the brand on the front of the unit. Fitted correctly it charges your car overnight for a fraction of public rapid charger prices; fitted badly it is the highest-load circuit in the house with the least supervision.

Why a badly installed charge point is the circuit that bites
An EV charger draws close to its rated current for hours, night after night. Every weakness in the installation is tested repeatedly, and the consequences escalate quietly.
Overheating cable and connections
Undersized cable, long runs without derating, or loose terminations run warm every night. Insulation degrades, terminals discolour and the failure mode is a fire risk in a garage or wall void rather than an inconvenience.
Tripping the main fuse
Add 32A of charging to an oven, shower and immersion on a supply with no load management and the main fuse goes. That is a call to the network operator, not something you can reset yourself.

Charge point installations look identical from the pavement and differ considerably behind the wall. These are the variables we work through at survey.
Units we install, and how to choose
We fit Fox, Zappi, Ohme and Wallbox charge points. Fox L Series is the value choice and starts at £900 supplied and fitted. Zappi, from £1,200 supplied and fitted, is the unit to choose where solar or battery integration is the priority, because its surplus-following modes are the most mature. Ohme suits drivers whose priority is deep tariff integration and automatic cheap-rate scheduling. Wallbox suits households that want a compact unit and straightforward app control.
Tethered units keep a cable permanently attached, which is convenient and tidy for a single-car household. Socketed units are neater on a wall, allow different cables and are easier to replace if a cable is damaged. If you have bought any of these already, fit-only installation starts at £500.
Almost all domestic installs are 7kW single phase, which is the practical limit of a standard UK supply and enough to fill most cars overnight. Where a property has a three-phase supply, more common on commercial premises and larger rural properties, 22kW becomes possible and worth discussing.

Supply, earthing and protection
Every installation starts at the incoming supply. We check the main fuse rating and the earthing arrangement, because on TN-C-S supplies a charge point requires protection against PEN conductor faults, either built into the unit or provided by a separate device, and on some TT arrangements an earth rod is needed. This is not optional detail; it is the part that keeps the metal bodywork of a car safe on a wet drive.
Load management is the second consideration. Where the existing demand plus a full charging load could exceed the supply, we fit a current sensor on the incoming supply so the charger throttles instead of blowing the main fuse. It costs a fraction of a supply upgrade and is invisible in normal use.
The circuit itself is a dedicated run from the consumer unit with correctly sized cable, appropriate RCD protection and clear labelling. Where the existing board has no spare way, no RCD protection or an obsolete design, we quote a consumer unit upgrade as a separate line so the cost is transparent.
Cable routes, mounting positions and outbuildings
Where the unit goes is a practical decision made with the car on the drive: cable reach to the charge port, no cable across a footpath, screen visible without crouching, and a mounting height that suits everyone who will use it. Runs are contained in conduit or trunking where they are exposed, clipped neatly where they are not, and sealed properly at every wall penetration.
Garages, detached outbuildings and long driveways bring longer runs, sometimes armoured cable and occasionally a submain, all of which we price at survey rather than on the day. Rendered, flint and listed frontages in and around Winchester need particular care over penetrations and fixings, and we will discuss the route with you before drilling anything.
