Fault finding in detail: symptoms, causes and method

The patterns below cover the large majority of domestic and commercial electrical faults we are called to.

Tripping circuits and earth leakage

An RCD trips because current is leaking to earth. Sometimes that is a single clear fault: a nail through a cable, a failed heating element, water in an outside socket. More often, particularly on older split-load boards where one RCD covers many circuits, it is accumulated leakage: several appliances each contributing a small amount, which together cross the trip threshold on a damp morning or when one more load is added.

Diagnosis is a process of splitting: isolate circuits in sequence, measure insulation resistance on each, and identify which contributes what. Where accumulated leakage is the cause, the permanent solution is usually separating circuits onto individual RCBOs, which is why fault finding and consumer unit work often belong in the same quote.

An MCB tripping is a different mechanism: overload or a short circuit. That points to load distribution, a damaged cable or a faulty appliance, and it is diagnosed by measurement rather than by removing devices until it stops.

Dead sockets, flickering lights and intermittent faults

A dead socket with a live board is usually a broken ring or a loose termination, and it is located by testing continuity around the circuit in sections. Intermittent faults are the hardest to catch and the most important to record, because a fault that appears only under load or only in wet weather is telling you something specific about its cause.

Flickering lights point to loose neutrals, failing drivers or dimmers mismatched to the lamps fitted. Where several circuits flicker together, the cause is usually further upstream: at the board, the tails or occasionally the supply itself, and we will tell you when the network operator needs to be involved rather than charge you to chase a fault that is not on your side of the meter.

Renewables and EV charging faults

Solar inverters, batteries and EV chargers fault for their own reasons: DC isolation faults, string failures, grid voltage or frequency events, communication losses between inverter and battery, and protective device incompatibilities where a charger requires a specific RCD type. Because we install solar, storage and charge points ourselves, these are diagnosed rather than handed back to a manufacturer helpline.

Frequently the fault is a design issue that was always going to appear: a Type AC device on a circuit that needed Type A, no load management on a supply that cannot carry full charging, or a hybrid inverter running at its limit. What should I do while I wait?

If it is safe to do so, switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit and leave it off, unplug appliances on that circuit, and keep people away from any damaged accessory. Never attempt to open a consumer unit or investigate exposed conductors yourself.

Why does my RCD keep tripping?

Because current is leaking to earth: from a single fault such as a damaged cable or water in an outside socket, or from accumulated leakage across several appliances sharing one RCD. Testing identifies which, and separating circuits onto individual RCBOs is often the permanent fix.

Will you fix it on the first visit?
