Hampshire's building stock spans a genuinely wide range. Basingstoke is largely defined by its post-war new-town expansion and more recent development, giving generous roof space, modern boards and straightforward access for solar and EV charger work. Southampton and Portsmouth mix dense Victorian and Edwardian terraces close to the docks and city centres with 1930s suburbs and post-war estates further out, so loft access and original wiring vary street by street even within the same city.

Market towns such as Andover, Romsey and Alresford, along with villages scattered across the South Downs and towards the New Forest fringe, bring a different challenge again: period cottages, some listed, timber-framed construction in places, and housing stock that has often had partial rather than full electrical upgrades over the decades. Eastleigh sits somewhere in between, with a strong mix of interwar semis and more recent infill development.

Hampshire runs from the chalk downland around Winchester and the South Downs to the flatter, more exposed coastal plain around Southampton and Portsmouth, and the wooded, sheltered fringe towards the New Forest: three quite different environments for a solar survey. Coastal properties around Portsmouth and Southampton Water get strong, relatively unshaded exposure but need equipment specified for salt-laden air and more exposed wind loading, while inland towns like Basingstoke and Andover tend to be more sheltered but can suffer more shading from mature street trees and hedgerows.

The South Downs and the chalk valleys around Winchester and Alresford create localised wind funnelling that we account for when siting panels and outdoor battery cupboards, and the New Forest fringe's wooded lanes mean shading from mature woodland is checked properly on site rather than assumed from satellite imagery.

Supply arrangements vary considerably: Basingstoke's newer estates and much of Southampton and Portsmouth run modern three-phase or upgraded single-phase supplies, while rural properties around Romsey, Alresford and the New Forest fringe are sometimes still on older single-phase supplies that need a DNO application before higher-capacity solar, battery or EV charging work can go ahead. We identify this at survey stage so it is reflected in the quote and timeline rather than discovered later.

Off-street parking for EV chargers is generally straightforward on Basingstoke and Eastleigh's estate-style roads and on rural driveways, but denser terraced streets in Southampton and Portsmouth sometimes rely on on-street parking, which affects charger position and cable routing across a pavement.

Hampshire has a large number of conservation areas and listed buildings spread across its market towns and villages - Alresford, parts of Romsey and numerous South Downs villages among them - where solar panels, external cabling and equipment siting need extra care and, occasionally, planning consideration. City centre conservation areas in Winchester, Southampton and Portsmouth add similar constraints on a smaller number of properties.

Rural access brings its own practical points: narrow lanes towards the New Forest fringe and the Downs can restrict scaffold and delivery vehicle access compared with wide estate roads in Basingstoke or Eastleigh, and some rural properties have long cable runs between the supply, the consumer unit and the proposed panel or battery position that need planning into the quote from the start.
