The board is the part of your installation that decides what a fault does

Your consumer unit is the safety device for the whole house. It decides whether a fault trips one circuit or all of them, whether a cable overload is disconnected in milliseconds, and whether a person touching a live conductor is protected. Older boards: rewireable fuses, plastic enclosures, a single RCD covering half the house, or no RCD at all: were compliant when fitted and are simply not equivalent to what a modern board does.

In an RCBO board every circuit has its own combined overload and earth leakage protection. A faulty freezer, a nail through a cable or water in an outside light disconnects that circuit alone. The lights stay on, the alarm stays powered and the fault is obvious rather than hidden behind a whole-house blackout.

A board change is also the moment when the rest of the installation gets examined. Before quoting we test the existing circuits, because a new board will correctly refuse to hold on cabling with poor insulation resistance, and it is far better to know that at survey than at 4pm on installation day. You need a board upgrade if

  • You still have rewireable fuses, a cast-iron or wooden enclosure, or a plastic board with no main switch RCD.
  • One fault takes out half the house, because several circuits share a single RCD.
  • You are adding an EV charger, solar, battery storage, a shower or a garden office and there is no spare way.
  • An EICR has coded the board as C2 or C3, or noted the absence of RCD protection.
  • You are letting the property and need the installation to satisfy a landlord inspection.
  • The board is scorched, buzzing, warm to the touch or has devices that no longer switch cleanly.

What an outdated board costs you when something finally goes wrong

A consumer unit only matters on the day there is a fault: which is exactly why deferring the upgrade is a gamble on a date you do not control.

No protection against electric shock

Without RCD protection, a fault to earth may not disconnect quickly enough to prevent injury. On circuits feeding outdoor sockets, garden tools and bathrooms, that is the difference the regulations exist to address.

Whole-house blackouts from one fault

A single shared RCD means a failing appliance in the kitchen kills the lights, the boiler, the freezer and the router at once: often at night, and often with nothing obvious to identify.

Fire risk from an obsolete enclosure

Plastic enclosures and loose or aged terminations are a known ignition source at the board itself, which is why modern boards are metal-clad. Scorching, buzzing or heat at the board is not something to monitor; it is something to replace.

A board change is a small job with a lot of technical content. This is what we are actually deciding and testing.

RCBOs, RCDs and surge protection

An MCB protects the cable against overload and short circuit. An RCD detects current leaking to earth and protects people. An RCBO combines both in one device on one circuit: which is why an all-RCBO board behaves so differently from an older split-load board where one RCD covers a whole bank of circuits.

RCD type matters as much as its presence. Circuits with electronic loads that can produce smooth DC residual current - EV chargers, solar inverters, some heat pumps and inverter-driven appliances - require Type A or specific higher types rather than a general Type AC device, or protection can be blinded exactly when it is needed. We select device types against the loads on each circuit, and this is one of the most common shortcomings we find on recent installations.

Surge protection devices divert transient overvoltage from lightning and switching events away from your equipment. They are worth specifying where there is solar equipment, a home office, a heat pump or expensive electronics, and we will tell you plainly when we think one is not worth the money.

Earthing, bonding and the incoming supply

A new board cannot be certified in isolation. Main protective bonding to incoming gas and water services must be present and correctly sized, the main earthing conductor must be adequate for the earthing arrangement, and the meter tails must be the correct size and length. Where any of those fall short, correcting them is part of the job, and we identify it at survey so it appears on the quote rather than as an extra.

Where the property has a TT earthing arrangement, an earth electrode and its resistance become part of the design and testing. Where the supply is TN-C-S, PEN fault considerations matter particularly if an EV charger or solar inverter is being added. On some properties the network operator is involved in upgrading the supply or moving the meter position; we will tell you if that applies before you commit to anything.

Testing the existing installation first

The single most common cause of a board change going wrong is discovering, after the new board is in, that an old circuit has poor insulation resistance and the new protective device will not hold. Modern devices detect leakage that an old fuse simply ignored, so faults that were tolerated for years become visible instantly.

We therefore test before we quote. If a circuit shows deteriorated insulation resistance - commonly old rubber or lead-sheathed cable, or damp in outbuilding wiring - we tell you before installation day, and quote the remedial work or a partial rewire as an option. Sometimes a full EICR is the sensible first step, and where a rewire is the honest answer we will say so instead of selling you a board that cannot fix it.

Commercial premises use distribution boards rather than domestic consumer units, often three-phase, with sub-distribution, emergency lighting circuits and heavier documentation requirements. Changeovers are scheduled outside trading hours where downtime matters, and phased where a site cannot lose power all at once.
